BoDeans - Outside Looking In

This is Cheese's CD. Very late 80s/early 90s. I'm a fan of the BoDeans, but I never had listened to this album. Sam Llanas' voice is like a parody of his voice today! So weird. So this band is from Waukesha, WI, (where Cheese is from) and he has a special place in his heart for them.

Listened: 2/15/12

Insert & Artwork: This trifold folds backwards, includes band photos, and one song is highlighted. I wonder why? Cheese?

Badly Drawn Boy - Have You Fed the Fish?

Although I love Hour of the Bewilderbeast, this one isn't as high on my favorite CDs. The CD artwork is cool - the swirl of a rainbow - and the insert has the awesome BDB collage illustrations, though.

Listened: 2/9/12

Insert & Artwork: CD is a swirl of rainbow colors - so pretty. The 8-page saddlestitched booklet has lots of cool illustrations in it

Songs to Keep: The Further I Slide, Tickets to What I Need

Favorite lyric: Just had a dream the other night/ I was married to the Queen/ And Madonna lived next door

Badly Drawn Boy - Hour of the Bewilderbeast

Badly Drawn Boy is an artist that Cheese introduced me to. Okay... not literally, but we did see him in DC at 930 Club. He puts on an amazing live show! How can you not like him and his signature knit cap. His music is very storytelly - almost like rap. And the music is a creative modge-podge of fun. Oh, and he's a big Journey fan - his rendition of "Don't Stop Believin'" is music to my ears. hee

During our trip in 2003-2004, we saw him in Athens at the 40 Watt Club. I have a commemorative poster of the event in my office (a Cheese hand-me-down). He got really irritated with people talking in the back and stopped the show to give them the what-for. Love that guy.

You can purchase your own poster by AJ Mapes and Jeff Wood - Drowning Creek.

Songs to Keep: will keep the whole thing, but I especially like "Pissing in the Wind"

Ben Folds Five - The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner

So I don't know much about Ben Folds Five except that Ben Folds is an amazing piano player. And who is Reinhold Messner? I had to read the liner notes - apparently this was a name that these guys used for their fake IDs. Apparently, he's a real guy(s) and they mentioned that in their cool CD insert which looks like a book.

Listened: 2/9/12

Insert & Artwork: The insert is 8 pages plus a heavier cover and it's designed to look like a book complete with band photos and lyrics. The CD itself has a nice black and red design.

Barenaked Ladies - Born on a Pirate Ship

I thought I was going to like this album, but I really didn't. The music seemed like it was from a musical. I found it just as annoying as the album cover.

Listened: 2/9/2012

Insert & Artwork: saddlestitched insert includes band photos, lyrics, and a photo of a red-headed bully kid on the cover. The CD itself is cool - a white ship's wheel on a blue background.

Whitney Houston - Whitney

Yes, I'm only up to the As, but in light of Whitney's death, I offer this tribute and skip to the Ws for a moment.

Early one morning on a walk, I came upon several CDs and a power cord for a CD player that someone had obviously chunked out the car window on the way somewhere. This was one of them. Although I was a fan of Whitney Houston in high school ("How Will I Know?"), I never purchased an album. I didn't keep all of the CDs I found that morning, but I did keep this one!

Listened: 2/13/12

Songs to keep: I Wanna Dance (with Somebody Who Loves Me), Where Do Broken Hearts Go?

Andy Stochansky - Five Star Motel

This is another Cheese find. He reminds me of another band - Ours. Online, I see people saying he sounds like Bono or Radiohead. Although I can say this music wasn't offensive to me, none of the songs really stood out. I see he played drums for Ani DiFranco in Canada. heh

Listened: 2/5/12

Insert & Artwork: Folds out to 23.75" long. The photography includes Andy holding a potted plant in a hotel lobby. Oh, maybe a motel lobby. Wait, motels don't have lobbies, do they?
